With their ninth studio album, Hymns in Dissonance, Whitechapel sheds the introspective melodies of their recent era to unleash what critics call their heaviest, most shockingly menacing work in over a decade. Serving as a direct thematic sequel to their landmark 2008 masterpiece This Is Exile, this cinematic concept record explores the terrifying descent of a manipulative cult leader. Through ten relentlessly brutal tracks, the band perverts the very definition of a harmony, with each devastating movement from “Diabolic Slumber” to “Nothing Is Coming for Any of Us” sonically weaponizing one of the seven deadly sins. Anchored by the sickeningly heavy singles “A Visceral Retch” and the punishing title track, Hymns in Dissonance is a masterclass in modern, trad-instrument deathcore brutality.
