Estonian vocal ensemble Vox Clamantis and their conductor Jaan-Eik Tulve continue their long-standing collaboration with Arvo Pärt on this new ECM New Series release, recorded in Haapsalu Cathedral and issued as the composer turns 90. And I Heard A Voice highlights Pärt’s most recent choral works while also revisiting earlier masterpieces such as the Sieben Magnificat-Antiphonen (1988). The repertoire reflects Pärt’s deep affinity with sacred texts, plainchant, and the contemplative power of silence.

Among the featured works are Nunc dimittis (2001), the evocative O Holy Father Nicholas (2021), and Für Jan van Eyck (2019), inspired by the Flemish painter’s Ghent Altarpiece. The title piece, And I heard a voice (2017), is Pärt’s only sacred choral setting in Estonian, based on the Book of Revelation. Through expressive textures, harmonic austerity, and the composer’s hallmark tintinnabuli technique, the album conveys a profound sense of stillness and transcendence.

Vox Clamantis, founded in 1996, has become one of the most important interpreters of Pärt’s choral music, praised for their purity of tone and deep spiritual insight. Produced by Manfred Eicher, this album continues ECM’s decades-long collaboration with Pärt, affirming his place as one of the defining voices of contemporary sacred music.
