Originally Sparks were known as Halfnelson, formed in Los Angeles by brother Russell and
Ron Mael. Their initial demo tapes got to the attention of Todd Rundgren who was making
records for Bearsville Records and he was so intrigued with the band, as their sound was like
nothing being offered then or even now. “It wasn’t the very first band I discovered, but it was
the most unusual thing I ever discovered.”

Initially released in 1971 as their self-titled debut “Halfnelson”, the Lp was one of the more alternative offerings that year by any standard, and it received some underground radio and college radio support, as tunes like “Roger” and “Wonder Girl” would become early favorites for their growing fan base.

A year later, the L.A. based quintet changed their name to Sparks, and the iconic “Halfnelson” Lp artwork would also be changed to reflect their new name. The Lp cover and first pressings of “Halfnelson” would go on to be one of the most collectable albums in the rock genre.
Featuring Ron Mael’s awesome design, that long out of print Lp hasn’t been seen at retail for decades…..that is until now!

As Friday Music is no stranger to the incredible music and artistry of Sparks, we are
very pleased to revisit the stellar debut of “Halfnelson” on Super Limited Edition Purple vinyl.

Produced by Todd Rundgren and Mastered impeccably by Joe Reagoso (Sparks/Todd
Rundgren/David Bowie) from the original Bearsville Records tapes, the “Halfnelson” album will
become a much long sought after revisit for old and new fans alike.

We are going to feature the album with Ron Mael’s stunning artwork, as well
a liner note from their legendary producer Todd Rundgren.
