Tokyo captures guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel in his deeply attuned trio with Scott Colley on bass and Brian Blade on drums—an ensemble noted for its balance of subtlety, fluidity, and expressive depth. Recorded in Tokyo in October 2024, the album opens with a delicate reading of Keith Jarrett’s “Lisbon Stomp” before moving through a wide-ranging set of Muthspiel originals, from lyrical ballads to folk-tinged pieces and more abstract, chamber-like explorations. Closing with Paul Motian’s “Abacus,” the recording nods to ECM’s history while highlighting the trio’s collaborative sensitivity.
Presented as part of ECM’s Luminessence series, this edition marks the album’s first appearance on vinyl and comes in a tip-on gatefold sleeve.
