Once again we have Moribund Records unearthing a little gem, in this case the original, unreleased version of 1996's Black Earth. This is the version that the label at the time asked the band to re-record, likely because it was too raw for their taste. So, basically, this one here is the real deal. This is very raw black thrashing metal: forget about polished or virtuoso crap. What we have here is barebones metal pretty much devoid of melody, just raspy vocals complemented by gritty guitar work and sometimes tin-can sounding drums, something that usually annoys me, but here it just works. This has a very demo-like sound, and I have a hard time picturing this sounding better with a more polished sound (I haven't heard the re-recorded 1996 album). There's a DIY vibe going on here; nothing flashy, just the guys going at it with their respective instruments and not caring about their music being accessible. I've found this one to be quite addictive.
