Pretty Ugly: The Story of the Lunachicks is a raw and energetic documentary that traces the rise, fall, and enduring legacy of the Lunachicks, one of New York City's most unapologetic and influential punk bands. Emerging from the late-1980s underground scene, the all-female group built a reputation for their outrageous performances, sharp humor, and fiercely independent spirit, helping to redefine the role of women in punk rock.
Through archival footage, candid interviews, and behind-the-scenes stories, the film explores the band's rapid ascent during the 1990s, as well as the personal and professional challenges that threatened to tear them apart. Struggles with relationships, creative tensions, and the pressures of life on the road ultimately led to their breakup around the turn of the millennium.
More than just a music documentary, the film captures the band's lasting cultural impact and the deep bond shared between its members. As the Lunachicks reflect on their past and reconnect in the present, Pretty Ugly becomes a story of friendship, resilience, and the enduring power of punk rock.
