Born At Midnite is the faux-vanity project of Amery Sandford and David Carriere. Jamming strictly ‘post-party’ with a finish line posture – either completing or scrapping a song in a single evening – the Montreal based duo began writing together in late 2018. Employing samplers, tape machines, and an extemporaneous approach to songwriting, the duo establish an eerily familiar atmosphere through an unpolished lens of thin ice. Playing into whilst poking fun at our era’s omnipresent narcissism and self indulgence, the group stitch together an unsponsored sort of ‘product-placement-punk’.
Pre-inevitable virality, the major label industry plants have embedded themselves into a local music community to gain authenticity with their new cassette, Alternity. On their most substantial release to date, all four songs are absolute unit-shifters. In the impressively casual opener ‘Y o Y’ Amery ambivalently questions times past while concurrently opening her compact. The track is bookended with Siri’s british cousin and hype woman come-lately delivering pure inter-dimensional knowledge that might just make your head hurt like mad.
Set to a beat that reeks like a teenage (discman-era) suburban gangster’s weed, the album’s namesake ‘Alternity’ – a word which has always existed – vaguely details a gloomy retreat clouded by the inviting, nonchalant darkness associated with luxury. The tape’s closer – ‘Rockstar Raver’ – transforms genres and hairstyles as it skips across the jaded stepping stones between walled gardens. Whether you’re playing the same 3 chords, to the same 3 boys, in the same 3 bars, or you’re taking the same 3 drugs, in the same 3 clubs, and you just need a hug…
