note about the descriptions - No, we don't write all of
these. Most
are written by labels or distributors, but if something is
extra
awesome we may add a note of our own to it and put that in
italics.
AESOP ROCK-NONE SHALL PASS-CD/LP -
"Aesop
Rock has been impressing the backpacker crowd with his
intricate
lyrics and dark, dirty, melodic production ever since the
he self-released
Music for Earthworms back in 1997, helping to define the
East
Coast underground scene and validate the presence of white
rappers.
And even though he moved to San Francisco in 2005,
prompting some
outcry from New York purists, all thoughts of bright,
funky West
Coast beats and lyrics can be put to rest, because None
Shall
Pass, the album being heralded as the true follow-up to
the seminal
Labor Days, is as powerful as anything the MC has ever
created.
Once again Blockhead takes responsibility for most of the
production
here, though he's helped out both by Rock himself (who
showed
off his skills, as well as those of his guitar-playing
wife, on
the Nike/iTunes-commissioned Original Run series back in
February
2007) and Def Jux labelhead and near-legend El-P, who also
adds
vocals to "39 Thieves," one of the few tracks on
the
record that has a fairly comprehensible message
("Money is
cool, I'm only human/But they use it as a tool to make the
workers
feel excluded/Like the shinier the jewel the more
exclusive the
troop is/Bullets don't take bribes, stupid, they shoot
shit,"
he rhymes in the breakdown). Because despite, or perhaps
more
accurately, because of, Aesop Rock's verbal talent and his
ability
to combine complicated internal rhyme with innovative
phrasing
and metaphors, a lot of his couplets, and even entire
stories,
are fairly cryptic. "None Shall Pass," with its
great
keyboard sample and helium-voiced chorus, is vaguely about
society
having to pay for its sins, the fantastic "The Harbor
is
Yours" tells the tale of a "pirate," and
features
some great vocal stuttering ("And you should tell
them where
you situate the gold/That is unless you'd like a vacation
with
Davy J-J-J-Jones"), and "Bring Back Pluto"
is more
than an appeal to astronomers, though to who else it
applies to
is a little unclear. This doesn't mean that there are a
lot of
empty phrases here -- Aesop Rock is clearly a careful,
deliberate
writer -- but he can tend towards the experimental school
of rhyme,
which can be a little alienating. Still, his cadence,
sharp and
accentuated, and his bi-tonal flow are strangely warm and
inviting,
and it's hard not to get sucked into at least trying to
understand
what he's saying, trying to make sense of it all. Plus,
the talent,
both of Rock and his guests (which, besides El-P, also
include
Ron Sonic, John Darnielle from the Mountain Goats, Breezly
Brewin',
and Cage) is impressive, and makes None Shall Pass an
album that
deserves a lot of attention, both inside and outside the
hip-hop
world. ~ Marisa Brown, All Music Guide"
AKIMBO-NAVIGATING THE BRONZE-CD (ALTERNATIVE
TENTACLES)
- This, the fifth studio album from Seattle's Akimbo, is
their
heaviest and most dynamic release to date. This battle axe
of
a record was sculpted at Head Bang and Kill Your Mama
studio in
Louisville, KY with Chris Owens (Lords, Ed Gein, Young
Widows,
etc.), whose talent for capturing heavy-hitting bands
culminated
in ten songs sure to crumble the walls around your
stereo.
"Navigating The Bronze" finds Our Heroes rockin'
out
with a revamped lineup- fretboard wizard Aaron Walters is
now
on guitar, joining the familiar cement-tight rhythm
section of
founding members Nat Damm (drums) and Jon Weisnewski
(bass/vocals).
In addition to a refreshed guitar sound, Weisnewski's
token throat-shredding
has evolved into a deeper, more ferocious bellow, lending
a primal
quality to the vocals as well as fueling the inferno with
new
melodies. Tracks like "You Can Hear the Honey",
"Wizard
Van Wizard" and "Huge Muscles" will sound
instantly
familiar to the seasoned Akimbo connoisseur with frantic
pacing
and more changes than one can count on two hands. However,
this
record has its cache of surprises for old fans, including
a classical
tribute to Bach in "Megatherium" and drummer Nat
Damm
- a multiple Seattle Weekly Best Drummer nominee - doing
his first
ever solo track "Roman Coins."
AKRON FAMILY(BEST OF SETH)-SPARROW TROUT HEART
SPROUT-3XCD
(Achord) - BEST OF SETH is a one-man group made
up of
AKRON / FAMILY member SETH OLINSKY. More than a side
project,
more than just the best, Seth offers us all of himself on
this
first outing entitled Sparrow Trout Heart Sprout.
Organized into
three separate, thematic, full-length albums, Sparrow
Trout Heart
Sprout was written and recorded in the Winter of 2004/2005
between
the recording of the first Akron/Family record and their
first
tour that Spring. Originally self-released as a run of 25
copies
and loosely distributed to friends and tap dancers, Achord
Recordings
is now happy to reissue and release a remastered, handmade
set
of 500 lucent, tri-fold letter pressed packages, all
stuffed with
a lyric sized poster sheet. The music on Best of Seth
shares Akron/Family's
range of styles and influences, yet the overall effect of
the
forty-two songs together and to each other is something
that is
uniquely Best of Seth. It was recorded in a bedroom big
enough
for little more than a bed, and the resulting intimacy and
silliness
are all reflected in the chaotic and grandiose
orchestrations,
the loosely held together droning midi blues, and the
early morning
ruminations on heartbroken joy. The Sun album is
characterized
by ethereal atmospheres and experimental flares. The Trout
flies
high upon waves of gorgeous bedroom psych-rock and
'calling all
your friends in the apartment building' harmonies. The
Sparrow
brings it back down with a collection of mostly acoustic,
ambient-tinged
introspective pieces.
ALLEY CATS-1979-1982-CD/DVD - early L.A.
feamle
fronted punk band famous for their Dangerhouse single.
This covers
pretty much everything but that.
ANGELIC PROCESS-WEIGHING SOULD WITH SAND-CD
(Profound
Lore) Formed in 2001, and hailing from Athens
Georgia,
the husband-and-wife duo of K.ANGYLUS and MDRAGYNFLY have
been
known to create some of the most mesmerizing and moving
music
within this specialized musical realm. Garnering already a
huge
response with the 2006 reissue of their Coma Waering
masterpiece
(Paradigms Recordings), a recording that is actually four
years
old, Profound Lore presents that album's follow-up,
Weighing Souls
With Sand. The overall emotional pedigree that Weighing
Souls
With Sand presents is simply overwhelming, and utterly
suffocating.
Sound-wise picture a wall-of-sound through the fuzzy
celestial
grace of My Bloody Valentine, the tribal ritualistic
pulsations
of Neurosis, the emotional fervor and bloodletting of
Swans, and
the powerful grace of Jesu, and you'll get a glimpse of
what THE
ANGELIC PROCESS offer. And then some.
ARCHITECTURE IN HELSINKI-PLACES LIKE THIS-CD/LP
(Polyvinyl)
Architecture in Helsinki is a six piece outfit of musical
chameleons,
formed in Melbourne, Australia, and now scattered across
the globe.
The band has developed a reputation for sensational live
shows
and a large, loyal fanbase. With two very successful
albums already
under their belt (2004's Fingers Crossedand 2005's In Case
We
Die), Architecture in Helsinki now hit the ground running
with
their third album, Places Like This. Upon first listen,
it's no
wonder that blogs and music sites are already chattering
away
insistently about the record. Places Like Thisis ten songs
of
instantly lovable pop brilliance, fizzing with electrical
currents,
channeling calypso rhythms and tropicalia flavors with
lashings
of percussion a-go-go. The album packs a kaleidoscopic
punch that
isn't far from astounding. Pop effervescence hasn't
sounded this
fresh in ages.
TIM ARMOR-A BETTER PLACE THAN I HAVE
BEEN-CD
- Formed barely a year ago, Tin Armor is a three piece
indie punk
band from Columbus, Ohio, specializing in the fast, short
and
sincere. “A better place than I have
been” is
the band’s first full-length album.
After touring hard on well-received demo, Tin Armor
decided to
jump right into the studio with Adam Smith and BJ
Holesapple of
Columbus Discount Recording. This album is the
result of
those sessions. “A better place than I have
been”
is an album chock-full of high-energy anthems and rooted
in deep
sincerity. The songs are catchy, fun and clever
enough to
sink in.
People have described Tin Armor’s sound as indie
power-pop,
and they’ve been compared to Ted Leo & The
Pharmacists,
Edsel, ‘blood and chocolate’ era Elvis
Costello and
Jets To Brazil.
BAT FOR LASHES-FUR & GOLD-CD - A
brand new
album from gifted songstress NATASHA KHAN as BAT FOR
LASHES. Bat
For Lashes' dramatic music creates an intimate, cinematic
world,
reminiscent of the nocturnal wanderings of Kate Bush and
the heartfelt
prayers of Cat Power. Natasha composes songs that rise out
of
a dark, heartbreak wilderness and take you on a journey in
to
the light. Taking influence from ‘70s film
soundtracks,
weather phenomena, childhood Halloween parties and a David
Lynchian
vision of suburbia, they occupy the tenebrous space
between innocence
and a loss of innocence and come straight from the
storyteller's
heart.
BLACK CROSS-SEVERANCE PAYS-CD (Auxiliary)
It's
been four years since their first album, "Art
Offensive,"
and Black Cross finally return with their long awaited
second
full-length, "Severance Pays." On these ten
songs they
have focused their patented melodic-yet-noisy hardcore
sound while
digging deeper into earlier melodic punk influences such
as Wipers,
Husker Du, and Gray Matter. This Louisville super group
includes
Rob Pennington (vocals - Endpoint, By The Grace Of God),
Ryan
Patterson (guitar - Coliseum, The National Acrobat), Evan
Patterson
(guitar - Young Widows, Breather Resist), Nick Theineman
(bass
- Young Widows, Breather Resist) and Forrest Kuhn (drums -
Halifax
Pier, Sunspring).
BLAQK AUDIO-CEXCELLS-CD (Interscope)
Blaqk Audio
is the electronic side project from AFI's Davey Havok and
Jade
Puget. The common thread running through all Blaqk Audio's
material
- Havok's signature dark vocal and lyrical stylings
combined with
Puget's epic, emotional arrangements - will be instantly
identifiable
to AFI fans, despite the synthetic washes, keyboard
flourishes
and electronic beats supplanting the traditional
guitar/bass/drum
AFI framework.
BLOODY PHOENIX-WAR HATE MISERY-CD (625
Thrashcore)
Featuring ex-members of LA's cult grinders EXCRUCIATING
TERROR,
BLOODY PHOENIX takes up where ExTx left off - blistering,
no fluff,
straight forward grindcore ala early NAPALM DEATH. 26
songs of
full throttle blastcore that levels everything in its
path. This
marks a return to true underground grindcore. Limited
vinyl version
soon to follow.
BREAKFAST-SIX PACK COLLECTION-CD (625
Thrashcore)
This CD compiles BREAKfAST's first two sold out EPs along
with
the rare first Demo, and displays why BREAKfAST is one of
the
best HC/thrash bands in the world. A great mix between
high-energy
tokyo skate-thrash, early 80s HC influence, mixes of SST
quirkiness,
and a passion for skating. If you missed out the first
time, be
sure to pick this up.
PETER BROTZMANN OCTET-COMPLETE MACHINE GUN
SESSIONS-CD
(Atavistic) This is the original BRO records LP
restored
to its ’68 format with 2 alternate takes, a live
version,
and new liner notes from Brotzmann and John Corbett.
“Machine
Gun” has been referred to as a landmark record of
the European
free jazz movement and Thurston Moore big ups it on the
one-sheet
so you know it’s got to be indie-legit. One of
the most
essential free jazz/avant albums, up there with
Interstellat Space
and Free Jazz.
BRUNETTES-STRUCTURE & COSMETICS-CD (Sub Pop)
With
their Sub Pop debut, Structure and Cosmetics, New Zealand
natives
The Brunettes see their first release on a US label
(previous
records were released on their homeland’s Lil’
Chief
Records). Fronted and formed by Jonathan Bree (vocals,
guitar)
and Heather Mansfield (vocals, keys, glock), the band was
born
in 1998 out of a garage-infused Auckland scene, and
they’ve
been making breezy, effervescent, Shangri-Las-reminiscent
pop
ever since. Structure and Cosmetics retains the sweetly
charming,
sunbeam-drenched sound The Brunettes are known for as
evident
in the sha-la-la chorus of “If You Were
Alien,” but
adds a hint of darkness and drama in tracks like
“Wall Poster
Star.”
CARIBOU-ANDORRA-CD/LP (Merge)
"Formerly
Manitoba, this is Dan Snaith’s first full length for
Merge.
He has perfected his extremely dense, multi-layered
electronic
craftwork, and this album is a “Pet Sounds”
inspired
masterpiece. The accompanying video for “Melody
Day”
is equally weird and neat, you should YouTube it if you
have the
chance. Canadian, east coast, southern, and west coast
tour in
the fall." Reminds me of Lilys and similar
shoegazer
stuff. Good stuff.
COLISEUM-NO SALVATION-CD/LP
(Relapse/Auxiliary)
Louisville's Coliseum detonate thirteen blasts of
high-impact
hardcore on their second album, "No Salvation."
Melding
the best elements of hardcore, punk and rock with the
urgency
and desperation of vital hardcore forefathers, Coliseum
makes
its formidable presence known. Unrelenting in intensity
and unapologetic
in its reaction to our modern day dystopia, "No
Salvation"
bleeds, sweats and cries Coliseum's passion, power and DIY
principles.
LPs on silver/white vinyl.
CIRCUS DEVILS-SGT. DISCO-CD (Ipecac) -
GUIDED
BY VOICES chairman, ROBERT POLLARD returns with TODD and
TIM TOBIAS
under their CIRCUS DEVILS moniker for another full-length
psychedelic
stunner.
CONCENTRICK-ALUMINIUM LAKE-CD - The
fourth album
from TIM GREEN (FUCKING CHAMPS, Louder Studios) under his
CONCENTRICK
moniker. Nine tracks of stunning sonic ambience performed
with
layers of electric and acoustic guitars and vintage analog
synths.
ERIC COPELAND-HERMAPHRODITE-CD (Paw
Tracks) Eric
Copeland is a prominent member of New York's Black Dice
and Terrestrial
Tones. For the past two years, he has amassed and twisted
a variety
of music and sounds, resulting in Hermaphrodite, his first
proper
solo album. Hopscotching a free range of structures,
sources,
and styles, this album is unlike any other, crossing the
wires
of foreign radio, space transmissions, artificial vocal
ensembles,
electronic street conversations and lost pop music. But
these
compositions don't highlight the sound dynamics as much as
they
let each song shake and unfold into a very open world,
continually
broadening. Like a good mix tape, Hermaphrodite flips the
listener
with each new song, engaging them to keep up, make the
connections,
and, ultimately, enjoy.
D.I.-ON THE WESTERN FRONT-CD - new album
by this
long lived punk band which is ex-Adolescents.
DYSRHYTHMIA/ROTHKO-FRACTURES-SPLIT CD - (Acerbic
Noise
Development) - In a most unlikely of pairings,
New York
instrumental wizards, Dysrhythmia, dig up the old bones of
a beast
laid to rest on their self-released Contradiction full
length
back in ye olde 2000, and have returned to grind
it’s remains
to a pitiful dust. Over a 14+ minute span, they deliver an
authoritative,
attention-seizing reconstruction of said release’s
finale,
“Earthquake”, and have without question
revisited
old grounds simply to salt the earth. Calmly answering
from the
opposing side of the musical universe, London soundscape
artisans,
Rothko, present 2 tracks of winding, throbbing reflection,
where
even the smallest changes in resonance funnel giant shifts
in
emotion - faultlessly demonstrating how sound can become
environment
and each note can be the next logical step to a
far-reaching horizon.
EARLIMART-MENTOR TORMENTOR-CD - tor
Tormentor
is the follow-up to Los Angeles-based indie-rock band
Earlimart's
critically acclaimed 2004 release Treble & Tremble,
which
garnered praise from Entertainment Weekly, Rolling Stone,
The
New York Times and Los Angeles Times, among others, while
the
band went on to play sold-out shows across the U.S.
Earlimart's
strongest and most collaborative work to date, Mentor
Tormentor
is the first release on Majordomo, a new imprint formed as
a partnership
between the band and Shout! Factory.
JEREMY ENIGK-MISSING LINK-CD - Enigk's
biggest
claim to fame is his involvement with Sunny Day Real
Estate, who
released five albums from 1993 to 2000, in which he served
as
lead singer, co-songwriter and guitarist. Although he is
often
cited as a progenitor of emo music, he has sought to
distance
himself from those types of bands. Enigk returns with the
quick
follow-up to last year's highly acclaimed World Waits with
The
Missing Link, which features brand new material along with
acoustic
versions from World Waits.
ESTRATEGIA LO CAPTO!-GRNA BOLA DE NIEVE-CD -
(B-Core)
- Surfing guitars, closer to decadence than to the
beach-life
sunny spirit, violent beats as from GSL bands like The
Locust,
post-punk grooves, eighties pop melodies and a big dose of
sense
of humour, far from the snobism and fake
intellectualism.
This is creativity at its purest, light and style, the
footprints
of a band that leads the rich underground Valencia
scene. From
Spain.
FOREIGN BORN -ON THE WING NOW-CD (Dim
Mak) "The
opening track on this cd feels like the scene in High
Fidelity
when John Cusack puts on the Beta Band EP and the whole
store
starts smiling and bobbing their heads. You know, that
every things
gonna be alright feeling. To me they sound like they are
from
Brooklyn, but in fact they are from Silverlake (the
Williamsburg
of LA). Grizzly Bear, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Strokes- -
you
can tell they listen to a lot of shoe gaze. I could see
them really
catching on, and as we know Dim Mak certainly has a knack
for
discovering this kind of thing."
FUCKING WRATH-SEASON OF EVIL-CD -
Fueled
by healthy doses of THC and a proclivity for loud music,
Ventura,
CA's The Fucking Wrath headed to the studio and recorded
their
album, "Season of Evil," during the week of
6/06/06.
The band's sound can be described as an amalgamation of
groups
such as Tragedy, Coliseum, Black Sabbath, and "Kill
'Em All"-era
Metallica.
IMPERIAL TEEN-THE HAIR, THE TV, THE BABY, &
THE BAND-CD
(Merge) "First Imperial Teen record in 5
years.
The title describes what the band members have been doing
in the
meantime. Quirky as ever, the band seems quite comfortable
with
what they are doing. Starting out on Slash records in 1996
the
band has an eclectic array of performers whose former
bands include
everything from Faith No More to the
Dicks."
IT'S
CASUAL-STOP LISTENING TO BAD MUSIC-CD
IT'S CASUAL-BUICREGL-LP
IT'S CASUAL-NEW LOS ANGELES-CD/LPRaging
two-piece
from Los Angeles fronted by the mailorder guy from
Southern Lord,
but sounding a lot like pissed off SST bands, whether that
be
Black Flag, Wurm, Overkill, or anything else. Heavy Greg
Ginn
worship with short, fast songs about being pissed off at
daily
life in L.A. LPs are on colored vinyl and limited to
500
copies.
LARSEN-ABECEDA-CD+DVD (Important) - This
CD+DVD
set captures an extremely special evening for
Larsen–one
that places them in a perfect visual and musical
perspective,
revealing more than a little about this enigmatic quartet
from
Torino, Italy.
For one night only, Larsen assembled their closest musical
friends
to play to a sold-out crowd at the Teatro Colosseo in
Torino.
The purpose of the performance was to pay tribute to the
work
of Czech avant-garde designer, typographer, founder of
Devestil,
and cultural radical Karel Teige and his Abeceda, a 1926
collaboration
with poet Vitoslav Nezva that minimalized text down to its
basic
components, establishing a poetic dialogue between text
and images.
Larsen brings minimalist beauty and melody with a live
performance
incorporating music, dance, and projections. Joining the
group
are friends David Tibet (Current 93), Baby Dee (Current
93), and
Jòhann Jòhannsson (Touch/4AD). The music
swells
in gentle pulses of softly stated melody, and emotion
clings to
each note while glistening shimmers of electronics dance
quietly
in the mix.The DVD reminds us of what a rich visual
experience
Abeceda was, and still is. As The Wire so perfectly put
it, David
Tibet’s performance “provides a vital link
between
the music and the visuals.” Thanks to Larsen’s
definitive
discipline and kindred visual & musical collaborators,
Abeceda
is an event of great subtlety and complexity. It is truly
a gift
that this performance was so perfectly documented in both
an audio
and visual format. Where the work of Karel Teige was a
tremendous
gift for the eyes, Larsen & Friend’s Abeceda is
a gift
for both the eyes and the ears. While Larsen themselves
sit impassively
as their compositions unfurl it’s clear that their
onstage
collaborators are strongly affected by the richly
emotional music
emerging, with their own contributions seeming to
articulate its
latent drama and passion. A fascinating and frequently
beautiful
event.” – The Wire
LAVODRAMA-IT'S CLOSE. THAT'S WHAT MATTERS-CD -
(B-Core)
Brilliantly conceived and played by this after-teenage
power-trio
from Zaragoza, this debut album recovers the spirit of
post-hardcore/rock
bands in the nineties like Aina, Shanty Rd., Kerosene 454,
Bluetip
(later Retisonic), Kepone, Rival Schools, Pegboy or The
Trans
Megetti and twists it into a contemporary sound.
LIARS-S/T-CD (Mute ) What do you expect
from
Liars? Noise? Concept? Both? Their new LP delivers
neither. Recorded
on the heels of 2006's Drum's Not Dead somewhere between
LA and
Berlin, Liars' 4th album marks another bold transition for
Angus
Andrew, Aaron Hemphill and Julian Gross. For the new album
Liars
have foregone theory for a more practical approach, one
based
on traditional song structures and instrument usage.
"I'd
never felt like a songwriter 'til this album,"
explains Angus.
"If you told me last year Liars would release a
record like
this, I would have laughed. If you said I'd be playing
guitar
solos, I'd have called you a liar. We never know what
we're making
'til it's made...this time I'm a bit
shocked."
LOOK MEXICO-THIS IS ANIMAL MUSIC-CD
"Look
Mexico, Floridian boys with hearts as big as Texas and
shorts
as short as your sister’s miniskirt, are officially
out
of the studio with an album in the band’s very own
style—yacht
rock. If you don’t know what yacht rock is,
it’s because
these boys coined the term, and the new album puts this
new genre
on audio display. This Is Animal Music is as unique as it
is timeless,
mashing together various elements including—but not
limited
to—horns. Yes, we said it: horns! And you should
hear just
how well they do it. AbsolutePunk.net says, “vintage
emo
is long overdue to be back in vogue,” and
Alternative Press
couldn’t agree more, naming Look Mexico one of the
100 Bands
to Know in 2007! “Intricately woven guitars over
frantic
drums and delightfully emotive vocals. Think Minus the
Bear if
they listened to a ton of American Football.”

MADBALL-INFILTRATE THE SYSTEM-CD (ferret)
Since
forming in 1988, Madball has been responsible for some of
the
most important releases in the underground, from the
seminal "Ball
Of Destruction" EP (1989) to the landmark albums
"Set
It Off" (1994), "Demonstrating My Style"
(1996),
"Look My Way" (1998), "Hold It Down"
(2000),
and their career defining resurgent Ferret Music debut,
"Legacy"
(2005). The band completes their music and lyrical
evolution on
"Infiltrate The System" with producer Zeuss
(Shadows
Fall, Hatebreed, Throwdown). It is comprised of 13 tracks
that
combine the most tried-and-true and fan-beloved elements
of their
esteemed catalog with new depth.
MADLIB-BEAT KONDUCTA VOL.3 & 4-CD A
modern
day genius, MADLIB continues to prove his place in musical
history.
It boggles the mind how Madlib has been dope for this
long, while
continuing to be on the fringe of mainstream music. Give
any talented
MC one of these beats, and listen to them spit to the
future.
Not just straight instrumentals though, Madlib always
provides
a captivating listen with interludes and samples from his
India
crates, including a wide range of psychedelic and funky
Bollywood
film music.
MAE-SINGULARITY-CD (Capitol) The Virginia
Beach-based
five-piece have developed a unique and affecting sound
that, with
albums like 2003's "Destination: Beautiful" and
2005's
"The Everglow," has scored them a rather
sizeable following
around the world. "Singularity" is a far more
rocking
affair, as evidenced by its first single, "Sometimes
I Can't
Make It Alone," a brawny blast that recalls some of
the seminal
alternative groups that the members of Mae grew up
listening to.
The latter portion of 2007 will see the band touring in
support
of this record alongside As Tall As Lions and Dear And The
Headlights.
MEKONS-NATURAL-CD (QuarterStick) Natural
is the
first new Mekon’s record in 5 years. They recorded
it the
old English country-side using acoustic instruments,
channeling
spirits and moonshine. It has an unmistakably old-timey
jug band
feel, not quite the punk rock nor the countrified Mekons
of yester-year.
These whiskey drinking Yorkshire/ Leedsians are 30 years
old this
year.
MINUS THE BAR-PLANET OF ICE-CD/2XLP (Suicide
Squeeze)
For the past six years, Seattle’s Minus the Bear
have orbited
the music world like a distant meteor, fine-tuning their
brand
of indie rock and discovering how technology can help
enhance
the band’s unique pop vision all of which is about
to culminate
with their latest full-length Planet of Ice, an album
showing
the band not so much transforming their sound as
transcending
it. Although the band has released a handful of EPs and
two full-lengths
in their prolific career (most recently 2005’s Menos
El
Oso and the sister remix CD Interpretaciones Del Oso),
with Planet
of Ice the band which now features new keyboardist Alex
Rose have
taken their brand of idiosyncratic indie rock to new
heights.
“I feel like this is the most cohesive record
we’ve
done,” bassist Cory Murchy says. “I hate the
term
‘organic,’ but that’s the one term I can
think
of when comparing this to our other records because
there’s
a lot of weird electronic stuff going on there, but
there’s
some really raw riffage as well.” FIRST EDITION
CONTAINS
A FOUR SONG BONUS DISC w/ 2 EXCLUSIVE STUDIO TRACKS. LP is
colored
vinyl.
MISTAKE-ANTICONGELANTE-CD (B-Core) That
voice
in spanish that brings them to Nueva Vulcano (the rebirth
of Aina),
but also those keybords a la Interpol, Futureheads or even
Maxïmo
Park. Present also are such introspective acoustic
tunes
similar to Sr. Chinarro or Los Planetas, without
mentioning the
emocore punch of bands such as Sensefield, Chamberlain or
Superchunk.
These are the credentials of the best group from the
Canary Islands
in years.
MODERN
LIFE IS WAR-MIDNIGHT IN AMERICA-CD (Equal Vision)
In
2005 Modern Life Is War signed with Deathwish Inc. and
spent the
next few months writing and recording songs for what would
become
their second album, "Witness," which was
released in
June 2005. Deathwish reissued "My Love. My Way."
in
the fall of 2006, and the band hit the road with Strike
Anywhere
and Bane followed by a successful winter tour with
Converge. Slower
and heavier than Witness.
TRAVIS MORRISON-ALL Y'ALL-CD (Barsuk)
Former
Dismemberment Plan founder Travis Morrison is back. All
Y'All
marks a reunion of sorts between two Dismemberment Plan
members,
Travis and producer Jason Caddell. The duo also took part
in a
pair of recently successful Dismemberment Plan reunion
shows.
Don't believe the Pitchfork B.S. machine who
apparently hate
everything this guy does that isn't Dismemberment Plan.
This is
as catchy and quirky as any of that
stuff.
NINA NASTASIA & JIM WHITE-YOU FOLLOW
ME-CD
- This stunning collaboration between gothic folk
chanteuse Nina
Nastasia and peerless drummer Jim White (Dirty Three) is a
taut,
raw document of two incredible musicians in deep dialogue,
exploring
the boundaries of songform to find a rare and striking
complement.
NEW BUFFALO-SOMEWHERE, ANYWHERE-CD (Arts &
Crafts)
More than two years since the release of her much loved
debut
album, The Last Beautiful Day, Sally Seltmann, AKA New
Buffalo,
returns with her stunning second album Somewhere,
anywhere. Seltmann
is a soft-spoken songstress from Melbourne. Her last album
was
named one of the Top 50 Albums of 2004 by Rolling Stone.
She also
penned the song "1234," the debut single on
Feist's
new album, The Reminder. For the recording of Somewhere,
anywhere,
she moved to a sleepy, coastal town near the Great Ocean
Road,
and decided once again to record and produce the album
herself.
The songs were written on a Thurmer piano that's been in
the Seltmann
family for over 100 years. "I see the album as
embracing
the concept of opposite experiences, and contrasting
moods: the
innocent, naive and colourful, versus the dark, intimate
and secret-like,"
says Seltmann. "The yin and yang in life. The highs
and lows.
The ego and the shadow. The masculine and
feminine."
NEW IDEA SOCIETY-WORLD IS BRIGHT & LOVELY-CD
(Exotic
Fever) - New Idea Society is largely the effort
and songwriting
of Mike Law (Eulcid). His new album, “the
world is
bright and lonely” is the band’s second
release and
it highlights Law’s mastery of building complex
songs out
of relatively simple layers woven around a lyrical
foundation.
With this album, New Idea Society ran the gamut with mood
–
so much so it’s hard to pin down exactly what type
of genre
this record falls into. This sort of musical
ambiguity was
not an accident, as Law and company tend to push the
spectrum
of mood and aim to write songs that could be recorded as a
band,
in the moment, to capture those feelings.
Additionally,
the lyrical weight of New Idea Society’s songs add
to the
deliberate and meticulous attention paid to the
songwriting.
NEW PORNOGRAPHERS-CHALLENGERS-CD/LP
(also, get
the bonus Executive Edition box for only $3.99 more)
(Matador)
- "THE NEW PORNOGRAPHERS return with their fourth
album and
their first recorded outside of bassist John Collins's
basement
studio. Airier, more spacious and more relaxed than its
jackhammer
predecessors, 'Challengers' is the sound of songwriters
Carl Newman
and Dan Béjar stretching out. In a recent Pitchfork
interview,
Newman rejected the "power-pop" label and
suggested
"power-folk" instead, and several songs on the
new album
live up to it, particularly the luscious Neko Case fronted
ballads
"Go Places" and "Challengers." That's
not
to say the band doesn't play anthems - it certainly does,
but
a rousing track like Béjar's "Myriad
Harbour"
is more imbued with the ghosts of Fred Neil and Viv
Stanshall
than with the new-wave songsters of yore. In general,
Newman's
songwriting is slightly more scrutable this time around;
his lyrics
still ring with wry perception and political metaphor, but
betray
some of the magnanimity that comes with new love -
"our arms
fill with miracles", he writes in "Go
Places".
The sophisticated, rich production values and complex
range of
songwriting will allow us to extend the New Pornographers'
audience
to new groups: AAA radio listeners, fans of Neko's solo
work,
and coffee drinkers in general. At the same time, the
overflow
of glorious pop hooks and stompers like "Heaven &
Earth"
and "Mutiny" will keep the existing fanbase in
the groove."
NO AGE-WEIRDO RIPPERS-CD NO AGE is RANDY
RANDALL
and DEAN SPUNT--two heavyweights from the LA punk / skate
/ art
underworld, who previously performed as two thirds of that
punked
DIY machine, WIVES. Formed in December 2005, following an
incendiary
final Wives tour--it ended with a trip to A&E in
Islington,
London--Randy and Dean bring the world back to their room
with
a different approach for their new band. A crashing
collision
of sweetly shouted ditties, ecstatic crunch feedback and
violent
bouts of percussion, the No Age sound is abound with pop
songs
fighting to break through a mist of white fuzz. In the
words of
the New York Times: “NO AGE have a rude energy, but
the
music is emptier than with Wives and more mysterious...
Mr. Spunt
sang and smacked the rim of his snare drum, while Mr.
Randall
picked out some broken chords. Then it shifted: Mr.
Randall tapped
an octave pedal, transforming his spidery guitar line into
a burly,
propulsive bass line.” Pitchfork loves
it...
NUMBERS-NOW YOU ARE THIS-CD (Kill Rock
Stars)
"Second album for KRS from Bay area three-piece. This
is
their 5th album in as many years. Numbers have strayed
quite a
bit from their Gang of Four styled dance punk of earlier
releases.
Their new sound is a bit more Electrelane and actually
seems to
draw on early goth/ industrial songstresses Xmal
Deutschland occasionally
(sorry for the esoteric/ Pitchforkian
reference)."
OH NO-DR. NO'S OXPERIMENT-CD Oh No
concocts 30
brand new beats, continuing Stones Throw's acclaimed
series of
instrumental hip-hop albums (following J Dilla Donuts and
Madlib's
Beat Konducta). For this latest Oxperiment, Oxnard,
CA-based Dr.
No researches raw and rare psych from Turkey, Lebanon,
Greece
and Italy to formulate his antidote to wack samples and
played-out
loops.
PASH-THE BEST GUN-CD - (Exotic Fever) -
Two years
after the release of their debut full length, Pash have
returned
with their sophomore effort “the best
gun”.
This album reveals a group of musicians who have grown
significantly
as songwriters.
Recorded by Jason Caddell (the dismemberment plan) at
Inner Ear
Studios, “the best gun” is eleven new tracks
of pure
Pash. Pash manage to channel the best of
‘90’s
pop heroes like Velocity Girl and Belly while at the same
time
conjuring the likes of late Richmond DIY superstars Marion
Delgado
and Flashbulb Memory.
Never timid, singer Merideth Munoz’s vocal lines are
clear
and strong and her lyrics both subtle and forward.
Lead
guitarist Erik Bruner-Yang delivers impressive and complex
melodies
that turn on a dime. New bassist Ryan McLaughlin
provides
the solid underpinning demanded of him without writing
boring,
nondescript parts and drummer Jon Bibb is as spot-on as
ever.
PIETASTERS-ALL DAY-CD The Pietasters have
been
at it for over 15 years, continuously touring and making
records
out of their hometown of Baltimore. "All Day" is
a culmination
of their years of hard work, becoming a record that pulled
together
all of their influences and inspirations and showcasing
their
signature rocksteady, soul and ska sound.
DUANE PITRE/PILOTRAM ENSEMBLE-ORGANIZED PITCHES
OCCURINGIN
TIME-CD (important) Organized Pitches Occurring
In Time
consists of two twenty-five-minute pieces of music, both
spawned
from Duane Pitre’s conceptual composition/score
Ensemble
Drones. With a form reminiscent of works by La Monte
Young’s
Theater of Eternal Music and tonality touching on the
floating
works of Terry Riley, these are aural tapestries based on
a minimal
tonal palette, with their instrumentation consisting of
guitars,
alto saxophones, bass clarinet, violin, viola, cello, tone
generator,
and pump organ. After Duane Pitre’s departure from
San Diego’s
Camera Obscura in Summer 2000, he started the project
known as
Pilotram. In September 2004 Pitre moved to Brooklyn and
began
in-depth studies of music and sound, including the physics
of
sound, the involvement of mathematics in tuning and
temperament,
the ancient tuning system of Just Intonation, and other
microtonal
tuning systems, as well as the minimalist composers La
Monte Young,
Terry Riley, and Steve Reich. 2006 found Pitre heading
back to
San Diego to focus on his solo works, and also marked the
transformation
of his performance/recording title from Pilotram to Duane
Pitre/Pilotram;
2007 will see further title transformation to Duane Pitre,
shedding
the Pilotram moniker altogether.
PRINZHORN DANCE SCHOOL-S/T-CD (DFA)
Prinzhorn
Dance School are an English band based in Brighton. The
music
can best be described as sparse, uncompromising and
idiosyncratic,
and as a result it polarizes opinion. They were signed to
DFA
Records after only a handful of gigs. They subsequently
released
a self recorded and self produced 7-inch single featuring
the
tracks "You Are The Space Invader" and
"Eat, Sleep"
before going on to record their eponymous debut album in
isolation,
in a rented barn in Sussex, having already written the
songs in
the disused chapel building they call home.
QUALUDE-EL ORDEN DE LAS COSAS-CD (B-Core)
Present
on this cd is an balance among experimentation and
intelligibility,
recharging less, stopping to breathe and wrapping
everything of
a worrying but fragile atmosphere. A wise mixture of
direct influences
(June of 44, Slint, Shipping News, Smart Went Crazy),
combined
with Spacemen's 3 atmospheric influence or the Velvet
Underground
and with the devotion going to Charles Mingus, Chet Baker
or Miles
Davis.
RENTALS-LAST LITTLE LIFE EP-CD Formed in
1995
by Matt Sharp (ex-Weezer) and Rachel Haden (ex-That Dog!),
seminal
neo-new wave pioneers, The Rentals return revamped with an
equally
exhilarating sound for a new decade. The Rentals are set
to release
their first new material since Seven More Minutes over 8
years
ago. The Last Little Life EP will wet the palette for a
full-length
of new material expected to follow.
DAX RIGGS-WE SING OF ONLY BLOOD OR LOVE-CD (Fat
Possum)
We Sing of Only Blood or Love, Dax Riggs' first album
under his
given name, touches on the sounds and moods of his
previous projects,
fusing the bluesy eclecticism of Deadboy & the
Elephantmen
and Agents of Oblivion with ominous shades of his earlier
sludge
metal outfit, Acid Bath.
TERRY RILEY-REED STREAMS-CD - TERRY
RILEY's first
LP, originally released in 1966 in a limited edition of
1,000
on Mass Art. Includes the first appearance of the time-lag
accumulator
on record heard in an early version of "Poppy Nogood
and
the Phantom Band," along with a version of
"Keyboard
Studies" on reed organ, and as a bonus, a psychedelic
big-band
adaptation of "In C (Mantra)" recorded under the
direction
of Walter Boudreau in 1970.
RILO KILEY-UNDER THE BLACKLIGHT-CD -
Under The
Blacklight, Rilo Kiley's fourth album and their first for
Warner
Bros, was recorded in Los Angeles in fall/winter 2006 and
winter
2007, and is the band at their most robust and dazzling.
With
the blood of Fleetwood Mac, early Heart and The Rolling
Stones'
1978 dancefloor masterpiece "Miss You" pumping
through
its veins, Under The Blacklight is a gloriously
decadent-sounding
album, smooth dance beats balanced by the underlying
lyrical motifs
of the seedier side of Los Angeles life; the characters in
the
songs embroiled in everything from drunken one night
stands to
the sex industry. The album's lyrical theme is of the
darker side
of life as revealed by a nightclub blacklight, each song's
character
sharpened to a precise focus by Lewis' unique, undeniable
approach.
In many ways Under The Blacklight is a classic Californian
love
child and Rilo Kiley its ardent and vivacious young
parents.
RINGWORM-VENOMOUS GRAND DESIGN-CD -
Cleveland
metallic hardcore champions Ringworm return to the world
with
"The Venomous Grand Design," which carries on
their
legacy of dark, vicious music with bleak lyrics and a
metal crunch.
Ringworm play hardcore in the classic Clevo style,
bringing to
mind bands like Integrity and In Cold Blood but keeping
their
own niche, thanks in part to Human Furnace's signature
vocal style.
SHOCK CINEMA-OUR WAY IS REVENGE-CD
(Kanine) The
Shock Cinema debut Our Way is Revenge includes six
original angular,
punk, though still largely "pop" tracks and two
remixes.
Jay Clark (Pretty Girls Make Graves) reworks "Howling
Door"
and Giovanni Marks (aka Subtitle) remixes the
all-in-French "Art
of Noir." Collective influences include Can, David
Lynch,
Barrington Levy, Ghostface Killah, and Os
Mutantes.
STEREO TOTAL-PARIS-BERLIN-CD (Kill Rock
Stars)
"The seventh record for Stereo Total strips down the
band
to its core members, Francoise Cactus and Brezel Goring.
Hence
the descriptive title of their native lands. The duo
continues
to meld together elements of new wave, punk, garage, surf,
and
disco all with a firm undercurrent of political leftist
rebellion.
Using synthesizers, drums, guitar, samples, and
monosyllabic chants
Stereo Total bridge a gap between genders, cultures,
languages,
and many genres. For fans of Enon, and Deehoof,
"
SUN RA-NIGHT OF THE PURPLE MOON-CD
(Atavistic)
A second reissue of an El Saturn record recorded in 1970,
this
is Sun Ra’s “Rokischord album.” It is
far more
upbeat and accessible than much of the other Sun Ra
catalog on
Atavistic—shorter songs w/ bluesy keys and more pop
seeming
compositions. Included here are also four bonus tracks or
unreleased
solo Wulitzer pieces home recorded in 1964. This seems
like a
good introductory Sun Ra for people who may be slightly
intimidated
by the world of free jazz.
TWINEMINE-TWINETIME-CD - Ex-Morphine
folks.
VHS OR BETA-BRING ON THE COMETS-CD It is
their
most ambitious, confident and hook-laden album to date.
Bring
On The Comets provides heartfelt anthems and an undeniable
return
to alternative/rock music.

108-A
NEW BEAT-LP - (deathwish) – “No one
can deny
that fake fashion posturing and lifeless clone music are
on the
verge of killing heavy music. On an undeniable rampage,
108 is
shocking listeners back to consciousness and getting them
thinking
again, feeling again, and banging their heads in defiance
at the
near-death of heavy music with message. Their first proper
studio
album in over a decade, "A New Beat From A Dead
Heart"
was recorded and engineered by Kurt Ballou (Converge) at
Godcity
Studios.”
AGORAPHOBIC NOSEBLEED/APARTMENT 213-SPLIT LP
(relapse)
- “Relapse's premier digi-grind terrorists
team up
with the recently reformed Cleveland cretins on this long
awaited
split release. Mommy's just resting...”
ALLEGIANCE-DESPERATION-LP (rivalry) -
“With
its sophomore full-length, "Desperation,"
Allegiance
has tossed much of its youthful idealism aside and
embraced a
stripped down, bare bones, all-out attack on the listener
instead.
The album embodies the weight of frustration that comes
from giving
everything you've got, only to be left with an
unsatisfying vacuous
feeling of what to do next. Recorded with Roger Tschann at
Grizzly
Studios (Look Back And Laugh, Lights Out, Never Healed),
this
album is simply dirtier, grittier, and
nastier.”
AMPERE/RINGERS-SPLIT 6" - (no idea)
Fresh
from the combined high of conquering all that is wrong in
the
universe AND setting up another tour, Amherst,
MA's AMPERE
and Brooklyn, NY's RINGERS have joined forces to spread
the condiments
one layer thicker! Yes! Two full layers! Your sandwich
will never
dry out again! Think of it! Revolution is at hand, and it
be at
33rpm! Limited red vinyl.
ANDREW W.K.-CLOSE CALLS WITH BRICK
WALLS-2XLP
Previously only available in Japan, now reissued as a
vinyl only
2xLP with 10" booklet.
A.N.S.-PROCESS OF STOKING OUT-LP -
Calling
the gulf coast of Texas home, bandana thrashers ANS share
their
love of skateboarding, Black Flag and Suicidal Tendencies
on this
LP, with a serious negative outlook on humanity and some
self-deprecation.
ASTRAL SOCIAL CLUB-SUPER GREASE-LP
(Important)
Super Grease is a limited edition vinyl-only release from
Neil
Campbell, a member of Sunroof!, Vibracathedral Orchestra,
and
A Band. Late last year, VHF Records released a compilation
CD
drawn from an earlier string of self-released CD-Rs that
showcased
the diverse methods employed in Astral Social Club’s
recordings.
These encompass straight-ahead drumbox/synthesizer
jamming, computer
processing, swirling loops, primitive vocal hollers, noise
catharsis,
tranquil guitar shimmer, and a busload of other angles.
The live
experience throws these methods up in the air, cranks up
the volume,
and adds a visceral, seething human presence before
letting it
fall all over the audience. Despite the excessive use of
electronics
and processing, the overriding feeling is one of a raw,
ecstatic
communion with the music, a million miles from sterile
“electronica.”
AVSKUM-CRUCIFIED-7" (Prank) Limited
re-press
of the debut 6-Track 1984 E. P. " Crucified By The
System"
by Swedish legends AVSKUM. A true to the time, lo-fi yet
intense
dose of rampaging Swedish hardcore with hoarse vocals,
pounding
drums and rushing guitars. A near-exact replica of
the original
E.P. , remastered and originally released in a limited
quantity
in 2005 to coordinate with Avskum's 2005 U.S. tour, this
new and
final limited edition version is pressed on white vinyl
with black
labels. AVSKUM will surface again for gigs in the U.K.
later this
year, and have material set for an all-new LP to be
released this
year.
BARBEZ-SOMEBODY PLEASE GET RID OF THE KING-7"
(Important)
The eighth release in Important’s Arts & Crafts
series,
which combines music with handmade artwork from the
artists featured
on the recordings. This 7” comes housed in a
screen-printed
jacket by Dan Kaufman, Barbez’s primary songwriter.
Each
is signed & numbered. The 7” will be followed by
a full-length
on Tzadik. Barbez has received accolades from a wealth of
publications,
called “compelling” by Time Out New York.
Barbez takes
shape in a sunstruck phantasm: Kurt Weill swims the length
of
a still pond, while underwater The Residents refurbish
their home
and Erik Satie descends from above to lie in the grass and
sip
seltzer. Provoked by French musette, Argentine tango,
post-war
classical, and pre-MTV punk, Barbez wrings these disparate
worlds
to form the band’s own soundscape.
Features virtuosic theremin player Pamelia Kurstin, who
has played
with many great artists including David Byrne, Air, John
Zorn,
Cibo Matto, and more. Barbez has released two substantial,
successful
full-lengths for Important Records.
“Barbez includes a brilliant theremin player who
smokes
cigarettes and a full-throated Russian singer who comes
across
like Joan of Arc with a sense of humor. They cover
everything
from Bertolt Brecht to Black Sabbath, but the real
attraction
is their melodically haunting originals.With a folk-music
sound
located somewhere between turn-of-century Eastern Europe
and modern
America, it’s arty rock that moves between brooding
and
winking.” — The New Yorker
BIG BUSINESS-HERE COME THE WATERWORKS-LP
(hydrahead)
- “Big Business feature members of The Melvins. This
is
their second full-length and it's harder, faster, and
catchier
than the first, unfurling all the mammoth riffs, furious
vocals,
and blazing drum work you've come to expect from this LA
band.
"Some of the most relentless, unyielding, and
profound music
in heavy metal today" - Thrasher Magazine.
"These guys
manage to deconstruct, reinvent, and then rebuild the
typical
noise rock formula" - Chord.” We have
a few
different colors of this. This record rules by the
way...
BRIAN JONESTOWN MASSACRE-THEIR SATANIC MAJESTIES'
SECOND
REQUEST-2XLP "The Brian Jonestown Massacre
is a
psychedelic rock band originally from San Francisco,
California,
led by guitarist/singer Anton Newcombe. Since 1995 The
Brian Jonestown
Massacre has released numerous albums, first for Bomp!
Records,
the label which gave them their start, and later for TVT
and Tee
Pee. BJM has been essential in the development of the
modern U.S.
garage scene, and many LA and SF musicians got their start
playing
with Newcombe, including Peter Hayes of The Black Rebel
Motorcycle
Club." 2xLP (180 GRAM COLORED SPLATTER VINYL).
BUILT TO SPILL-GOT AWAY-LP (new vinyl
only EP
with two long songs) New 12" single featuring 'They
Got Away'
backed with 'Rearrange.'
CAVE SINGERS-SEEDS OF NIGHT-7"
(Matador)
"The first taste of what has quickly become one of my
most
listened to records in ages. The Cave Singers are
new band
from Seattle and their debut album Invitation Songs is out
on
September 25th. This 7" has one song from the
album
and a non-LP b-side. It is packaged in a plain white
sleeve
w/a sicker on it that is redeemable for $2.00 of the the
full
length."
CEASE UPON THE CAPITOL-S/T-LP - (sons of
vesta/impure
muzik) – ITALIAN / FRENCH IMPORT –
“The
next step in musical evolution, Cease Upon The Capitol up
the
ante in the heavy music arena. There are ten tracks
in twenty-one
minutes here. Instrumentals melt into driving rock jams
fit for
window-down highway drives. My Bloody Valentine meets
Boris meets
Envy meets Converge. Styles clash and ricochet off each
other,
and a certain style of unpredictability doesn't hide an
overwhelming
sense of cohesion. Fans of their previous releases will be
blown
away by the shape their music has
taken.”
CEREMONY-SACRED PEOPLE-7" - (bridge
nine)
– “Ceremony is a band that came raging out of
the
Bay Area of California and are stopping at nothing. After
the
release of the "Ruined" 7" and their debut
LP "Violence
Violence" on Malfunction, the critics' reactions can
only
be described as one thing: astonishment. "Scared
People"
is its first release on Bridge Nine and it is a six-song,
eight-minute
blast of a 7" EP that doesn't
stop.”
CRUCIFIED MORTALS-CONVERTED BY
DECAPITATION-LP

drums, solid
razor sharp riffing, and strong howling vocals! This is
the thrash

DANGERLOVES-LIPSMART-7" (fashionable

– “Toronto folk from Career Suicide, the
Bayonettes,
and a slew of others itching the power-pop bug, perfect
soundtrack
to yer dwindling summer.”
DEFIANCE OHIO/ENVIRONMENTAL YOUTH CRUNCH-SPLIT
7"
-A blast of politically conscious, stripped-down punk rock
performed
with acoustic guitars, violin, cello, banjo and upright
bass.
Total DIY action that has garnered the band a worldwide
underground
fanbase.
DEM NASTY HABITS-NASTY HABITS-7" (die
slaughterhaus)
– featuring a member of cpc gangbangs, dem nasty
habits
attack listeners with six tracks of intense punk rock and
roll.
DR. DOG-WE ALL BELONG-LP - Dr.
Dog’s groundbreaking
2007 release, We All Belong, is now available on 12”
vinyl!
Do you like the Beatles? So Do these
guys.
DRY ROT-SUBORDINATE-7" (painkiller)
–
“These spiritual creeps from southern California
knocked
our socks off last year with their self released
Permission 7".
Cues were taken from the likes of Die Kreuzen, Void, and
the oft
neglected United Mutation, to name a few, with the lyrical
content
focusing on the most vile and sick aspects of real life.
This
new ep is a concept record detailing a true incident of
slavery
in recent times. Includes a 16 page booklet with art by
guitarist
Jordan Darby. This is truely feel-BAD
music.”
EAT-IT'S THE NOT THE EAT-IT'S THE
HUMIDITY-2XLP
"Alternative Tentacles dredges up the complete
recording
on Florida's long lost The Eat. 2 singles and a cassette
album,
along with a ton of live shit- there's 59 tracks on 2
discs here,
all from 1978 to 1985. I love these re-release crash
courses in
(mostly) forgotten old bands- if the packaging is done
right and
there's good reading material in there, then it's a real
treat
to delve into the history of some band that came and went
in a
bang and a flash 20 or 30 years ago. With Alternative
Tentacles
you know the packaging is done right, and the liner notes
are
comprehensively written, so top marks so far... The music
is great,
poppy, rock'n'roll punk, with heaps of energy, passion,
and just
a touch of snot. Songs like "Communist Radio"
(their
1st beloved KBD-comped single), "Young Guy," and
"One
Call To Cuba" should be known as the classics they
are. Comparisons
to The Real Kids have already been made so I won't go
there, but
I also hear something akin to Minutemen or The Big Boys in
some
of their later material, and at times even a more
rock'n'roll
The Nils. Gosh... so many great bands under appreciated
and under
recorded... when I invent my time machine I'm going to
include
The Eat on the list of bands I'm going back to round up.
For now
I'll just recommend this to you and thank A.T. for a job
well
done!"

ELEH-FLOATING FREQUENCIES 2-LP
(important) -
Eleh was formed to pay tribute to early experimental
minimalist
pioneers, especially La Monte Young, Terry Riley, Eliane
Radigue,
Pauline Oliveros, and Charlemagne Palestine. This record
is pressed
in a deluxe edition of 400 on audiophile quality 180-gram
vinyl,
mastered and pressed at RTI with letter-pressed jackets.
Eleh
creates highly minimal and deeply spiritual pure analog
drone
music with emphasis on the physical ultra-low end.
Incorporating
tones as low as .05 hz (well below the range of human
hearing),
Eleh is as much a physical experience as an audio
one.
Deluxe audiophile pressing of only 400.
FUGS-IT CRAWLED INTO MY HANDS, HONEST-LP
- The
Fugs began their career recording for the legendary
avantgarde
label ESP-Disk’ in the mid 1960s before signing to
Reprise.
This is their second Reprise release from 1968, reissued
on 180-
gram virgin vinyl with a deluxe gatefold reproduction of
the original
artwork. The original NYC freak-folk!
GOOD LIFE-HEARTBROKE-7" - the first
single
from The Good Life's fourth full-length Help Wanted Nights
(to
be released September 11, 2007). Accompanied by non-album
track
"Thirty- Year Evaluation," this release is
available
digitally and as a limited edition 7" with B-side
etching
in hand-screened, individually numbered
packaging.
HEARTWARMER-HONEYMOON-LP (gasping for
breath)
– “The name kind of sums it up. Songs that
crackle
and pop the same way that glowing embers from a campfire
rocket
skyward, then slowly fade into darkness.
"Honeymoon"
feels like it was recorded on a bone-chilling December
evening
in a rickety Appalachian farmhouse. It shares a looseness
and
familiarity that most bands spend a lifetime trying to
achieve,
but Heartwarmer injects that tenderness with shadows and
mystery.which
only makes the band that much more intriguing. Features ex
members
of Kodan Armada and Boa Narrow.”
HOLLERTRONIX-VOL. 7-12" (with
Justice "d.a.n.c.e."
) - The return of HOLLERTRONIX equals the first appearance
of
BOOGIE DOWN BOTTLE NOSE DOLPHINS, a new tag-team featuring
Holler
cofounder DIPLO and NYC's DJ ELI ESCOBAR. Stacked with six
brand
new Bmore club edits and the most brazen track selection
since
the first EP, there's no doubt this one will be keeping
asses
on the dancefloor all summer.
HOT MACHINES-2-7" (Dusty Medical)
"While
not really an active band, the Hot Machines certainly are
a force
to be reckoned with. Featuring Jered from the Ponys,
Miss
Alex White and Matt from the Baseball Furies this
"side project"
or whatever delivers material that equals (and sometimes
betters)
the material from these folks "real"
bands. And,
if you know how much I love the Ponys and Miss Alex White
that
is saying a lot. Jered sings one song and Miss Alex
White
sings the other. One of the best 7" singles in
ages,
basically the definition of what makes a great
7"."
INTERPOL-OUR LOVE TO ADMIRE-LP+CD
(CAPITOL) -
“Our Love To Admire is at once unmistakably Interpol
and
undeniably new. The witty and perverse "No I In
Threesome"
is an upbeat ode to shaking up a staid relationship
propelled
by Carlos D's peerless bass melody while the tenderly
observant
"Pace Is the Trick" proves that the band are
still the
masters of the dramatic check the painful pause right
before the
sinfully satisfying return of Sam's thundering drums and
Daniel's
ringing lead guitar. The band's impressively seductive
evolution
is obvious all over the record, but never more so than on
tracks
like "Mammoth," "Who Do You Think" and
on
the album's lyrical centerpiece, the ghostly "Rest My
Chemistry."
While Daniel is understandably proud of the song he
cautions against
reading too much autobiography into its lyrics. "We
always
leave the interpretation to the listener," he says.
"I
mean, you shouldn't watch a movie for the first time
listening
to the director's commentary!" Our Love to Admire
closes
with "The Lighthouse," a funereal dirge that is
among
the most unexpected and memorable songs ever recorded by
the band.
Almost entirely percussion-free, the song is constructed
around
Daniel's mournful guitar and Paul's sparten lyrics. Not
only is
it one of their finest moments to date, it provides the
album's
most goose-bump inducing moment, the very same reflex
shivers
that make Interpol live shows such an exhilarating
experience.
As the very last song the band recorded for the album it
was,
they say, the hardest to play. The hypnotic guitar part
was played
on a 50-year-old guitar that had toxins on the strings,
providing
Daniel with a blistering and painful sensation in his
fingers.
The band weren't even sure the track would make it out of
the
studio, but once they heard Paul's remarkable vocals they
were
floored. The song and the album doesn?t so much end as it
bleeds
to a close with a long, echoey coda filled with feedback
and strin!
gs. A fittingly dramatic end to a stunning and emotional
journey.
Interpol is back, every bit as good as before but charged
with
a new spirit, a new direction, a new label and, most of
all, a
new confidence.”
INSTRUMENTS-JOY-7" - (Happy Happy Birthday To
Me)
The Instruments (members of Circulatory System, Elf Power,
Olivia
Tremor Control) cover four Joy Divison tracks. The
7"
features two tracks "Passover" & "New
Dawn
Fades" . The single comes with a CDR featuring those
tracks
as well as "Decades" & "Love Will Tear
Us Apart".
This single is limited to 300 copies.
JOAN
OF ARC-MANY YIMES I'VE...-7" (polyvinyl)
–
“These two songs are studio recordings of the live
versions
and are different than the versions on Joan Of Arc's
previous
album, "Eventually, All At Once". Players
include all
members of Make Believe and Mike Kinsella (American
Football,
Owen). "Among the act's considerable strengths is an
ability
to assimilate so many sounds within the framework of songs
that
are, at their core, sparse guitar meditations" -
Boston Globe.”
KISS THE ANUS OF THE BLACK CAT-S/T-7" -
(Implied
Sound) - The young wizard of dark, apocalyptic
folk (Belgium’s
Stef Irritant) unfurls his first vinyl release, a 7”
using
Hegel’s dialectic’s as the conceptual
foundation.
The A-side builds with a slow, brooding repetition of
chants and
swirling acoustics before exploding into a battle cry
filled with
personal emotion and lyrical venom aimed at those in power
who
suppress the desire for human progress. The B-side is a
delicate,
somber requiem to our lost potential. Easily, some of the
strongest
material yet from Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat.
Complimented by
the artwork of Kristof Meers from his series, The
Inversion Of
Hierarchy and pressed on white vinyl.
MENOMENA-FRIEND OR FOE-LP (with awesome
diecut
packaging and spinwheel cover) - NOW AVAILABLE ON VINYL!!!
The
anticipated follow-up to the acclaimed I Am The Fun Blame
Monster
album from MENOMENA. Twelve tracks of fractured post-punk,
post-hip-hop,
post-pop magic. Packaged with multilayered cover art by
renowned
graphic novelist CRAIG THOMPSON. Pressed on high quality
180-gram
black vinyl, and packaged in an incredible multilayered
jacket
designed by acclaimed graphic novelist Craig
Thompson.
MOUTH SEWN SHUT-DOOMED FUTURE-LP (Profane
Existence)
Less than a year and a half after forming the band,
Boston's ***MOUTH
SEWN SHUT unleash their second LP on Profane Existence and
show
a much more developed sound than before. The music is
mainly a
brutal fusion of fast hardcore and crust mixed with reggae
and
ska influences into a raw and original sound all their
own. The
band’s extremely catchy and unique blend of musical
genres
sounds rather different than what you might expect when
you think
of punk mixed with reggae or ska. MSS has created a much
more
raw and aggressive interpretation of reggae music that at
no point
loses any power or brutality. The lyrics are totally
political,
but also have a deep sense of dark cynicism that points
out that
so much of this world has already been destroyed beyond
repair
by it's human inhabitants and that weâre all running
out
of time.
NATIONAL-MISTAKEN FOR STRANGERS-7" (tour
single,
very limited) (Beggars Banquet) "Back at the
end
of May the National freaked out the whole city by booking
five
nights of shows at the Bowery Ballroom AND selling out
every show
well in advance. For the shows we made an exclusive
version
of the UK "Mistaken For Strangers" 7" with
a unique
sleeve and labels. We had some left over so here
they are
for your buying pleasure. "Blank Slate" is
non-LP."
NUNSLAUGHTER-HEX-LP - “Like blood
soaked
entrails ripped from the disemboweled body of christ,
NunSlaughter
rape the heavens with their much awaited third studio
album! "Hex"
is a pyre of 80's Devil Metal Death featuring ten new
satanic
commandments plus the devil's seven classic cuts on the
"Face
of Evil" demo finally re-recorded in a proper studio!
There
is no sign of "progression",
"maturing" or
other form of weakness; "Hex" is a continuation
of NunSlaughter's
last album or last 7" EP and soon to become a fan
favorite...
This is the same music you've enjoyed for the last two
fucking
decades!!”
OCEAN/CONIFER-SPLIT-LP - This split
12”
release is limited to 1,000 copies. It is packaged in a
screen-printed
Mylar jacket with a screen-printed Mylar insert and a
screen-printed
paper insert. Cover artwork is of a nineteenth-century
statue
located at the center of Portland, MN, the dramatic
coastal home
of both groups. This is the sound of a musical brotherhood
entirely
unique to Ocean and Conifer. Over the years, Ocean and
Conifer
have shared vans, stages, members, practice spaces,
apartments,
beers, a city, and a kindred musical spirit. In a lot of
ways
it’s a shock that this split hasn’t happened
already,
but perhaps it was so obvious that nobody noticed it
needed to
happen. Sometimes the truth is right beneath your nose.
With original
drummer Nate Nadeau back in the group, Conifer is heavier,
tighter,
and more united than ever before. The band has toured and
player
with Mono, Black Dice, High On Fire, Asva, Mouth of the
Architect,
and many more, and Summer 2006 saw the group embark on an
ambitious
twenty-six-city tour. Ocean’s twentyminute epic was
recorded
in the same sessions that birthed their next album,
currently
untitled, for Important. Containing all of the epic
minimalist
intensity and robust heaviness that has gained them
international
attention, “Durance Vile” is a whole new
level.
ONLY CRIME/OUTBREAK-SPLIT 7" (think
fast)
– “Featuring a cast involving Russ Rankin
(Good Riddance),
Aaron Dalbec (Bane), Doni Blair (Hagfish), Bill Stevenson
(Descendents,
Black Flag), and Zach Blair (Gwar, Hagfish, and most
recently
Rise Against), it's no wonder why fans and critics alike
have
dubbed Only Crime as "a punk rock supergroup."
But Only
Crime has paid no attention to those who have painted them
inside
a box with connections to their other/previous bands. The
group
blasts through each song with an energy and passion that
is hard
to find in this day and age. In a similar fashion,
Outbreak rips
through their songs, picking up where their 2006 debut
full length
"Failure" (Bridge 9/Think Fast!) left off, but
with
a more raw, rock and roll edge. The two bands team up for
this
diverse split, but with both feet planted firmly in punk.
Features
two previously unreleased Only Crime tracks, exclusive to
this
release and recorded at the Blasting Room (Rise Against,
Comeback
Kid, Alkaline Trio), and two brand new Outbreak
tracks.”

RAMPAGE-LIMIT OF DESTRUCTION-LP (locking out
records)
– “Unabashedly wearing their New York hardcore
influences
on their sleeves, Rampage seem to channel the energy of
Breakdown
and Straight Ahead without blatantly lifting riffs or
stealing
ideas from either of these seminal NY bands. Unlike many
bands
influenced by this style, Rampage remembers that speed is
one
of the most important ingredients to the recipe of good
NYHC -
breaking from many prevailing hardcore trends, "Limit
Of
Destruction" opens with a drum blast that is as
reminiscent
of the Crumbsuckers or Ludichrist as their less crossover
influenced
NYHC brothers. This twelve track full length flies by at
eighteen
minutes, and is a reminder of the old hardcore adage
"loud
fast rules." Now available on colored
vinyl.”
SEBADOH-FREED MAN-2XLP - (Domino)
“’The
Freed Man’ was one of the first and most crucial
releases
in the burgeoning lo-fi movement, which would peak in
media attention
in the mid-90s with the success of Beck, Guided By Voices,
and
Pavement. But while it helped inspire and define a global
movement,
there's little trace of that ambition within these tracks.
Sebadoh
in this incarnation are a cherishably intimate experience.
The
70-odd minutes of wayward brilliance collected here offer
the
listener a rare and recommended opportunity to transport
themselves
to the weed-hazed bedroom where these scraps, songs, and
pranks
were recorded, to imbibe deeply of the haywire creativity
that
went on in these sessions. This deluxe edition re-issue
has been
re-mastered and includes a whopping 52 tracks on a single
disc,
including many that haven't seen the light of day until
now. Liner
notes by Lou Barlow and Eric Gafney.”
SNAKE APARTMENT-PAINT THE WALLS-LP -
“SNAKE
APARTMENT twelve gross inches of ugly, noisy punk slither
out
of Rhode Island. Heavy scuzz rock drenched in syrup puts
on its
studio shoes and has a loose night out on the town,
sounding like
a shelved Am Rep gem just dusted off and released to
cumsumers.
Here's a small glimmer of hope for middle aged losers who
enjoy
late Black Flag, Flipper, Brainbombs, Drunks With Guns,
God Bullies,
and TAD, and neo hipsters and indie label CEO's falling
over themselves
with glee over bands like Pissed Jeans, Clockcleaner, and
Nirvana."
SUNN ORACLE-LP (forgot to list this the
last
time. comes with free poster too. LP only) - (southern
lord) –
“ORAKULUM was originally composed for a live
performance
collaboration with the New York sculptor Banks Violette at
the
Maureen Paley Gallery in London, June of 06. Violette
created
sculptural representation of SUNN O)))s entire backline in
cast
resin and salt, including amplifier stacks, instruments,
effects
& accompaniments. In addition, black laquered stage
platforms
and sound panels were created as a basis for the groups
actual
backline setup, and a selection of drawings were presented
within
the context. The result of this performance and
collaboration,
which was conducted in a sealed gallery space, was
intended to
generate a feeling of absence, loss and a phantom of what
once
was. The A side of this lp: BELUROL PUSZTIT was also
recorded
at this session. Initially this song was created for the
"Jukebox
Buddha" compilation as it features the use of the
tone generating
Buddha Boxes within the track. In the style of sunn 0)))
these
boxes were run through the sunn backline and recorded at
maximum
volume which of course yielded maximum results! BELUROL
PUSZTIT
" also features extra "instrumentation"
from Atsuo
Mizuno (Boris) on drums and Joe Preston (Earth, Melvins,
Thrones)
on jackhammer (!!!)”
TWO LONE SWORDSMEN-WRONG MEETING II-LP -
Following
the success of their last album, From the Double Gone
Chapel,
Two Lone Swordsmen return and the evolution of their sound
continues.
Generally credited with inventing indie dance through his
work
with Primal Scream, Flowered Up, and My Bloody Valentine,
Andrew
Weatherall pioneered the crossover between big electronic
beats
and equally big guitar chords—and his fondness for
good
old-fashioned rock ‘n’ roll is celebrated on
this
release. Featuring elements of garage and rockabilly, but
also
the more familiar layer of electronica, Wrong Meeting 2
moves
in a new direction. What is particularly striking about
this album
is Weatherall’s growth in stature—not only as
a singer
and frontman, but also as a sharp wordsmith. Here, we find
tales
of love and rejection that rip open a seething underbelly
of mistrust,
tension, revenge, and redemption. Wrong Meeting 2 wears
its influences
on its sleeve while still sounding utterly contemporary.
Once
again, TLS have created an album that pushes the
boundaries between
musical genres and remains challenging to the
listener.
TYVEK-SUMMER BURNS-2X7" - Tyvek--
Kevin
(guitar/vox), Heath (guitar),Larry (bass/the law), and
Matt (drums)--
hail from Detroit, MI; you can probably hear it in the
music.
Tyvek's songs are a product of trying to understand their
city:
the empty spaces, poisoned ground, burnt-out building
shells.
In spite of all that, Tyvek love the land, the city, the
infrastructure,
and the sound... the sound of turning it up and then
having your
friends turn it up too, until you're all wired into some
cheap
frequencies and feeling some real buzz in the air. The
Tyvek Sound:
Alienated nowness banged out for love and bro-dom and
drinks.
Think half the monks, half the electric eels, playing half
japanese's
gear.
UNTIED STATES-BYE BYE BI-POLAR-7" -
(Beet
Nicotine) – What’s in a name anyway? Well,
perhaps
for Untied States (note the i comes before the t), more
than one
might gleam from just a passing glance. Like their name,
they
take the all-too-well-known forms and flip them on their
heads.
What’s to be learned? Don’t take anything for
granted.
What might appear odd at first is somehow familiar and
vice versa.
This music pleads for real attention in a time where irony
and
distraction prevail. With each successive release, Untied
States
reigns in some of their past “excesses” only
to spin
out in some other direction completely, allowing them to
truly
wear the “experimental” tag without having to
try
too hard. These two songs from an upcoming
as-yet-to-be-titled
full length serve as a good example of what’s to
come from
this ever-evolving group. Limited to five hundred
hand-silkscreened
covered copies, the first 100 printed on vinyl.
That’s right,
vinyl in vinyl. For fans of Unwound, Sonic Youth,
etc.
VELVET CACOON-GENEVIEVE-LP
VELVET CACOON-NORTHSUITE-LP - VELVET CACOON
consists
of sole songwriter JOSH and his dream-pop muse ANGELA, two
souls
mesmerized by chemicals and the after-hours. They are
architects
of a minimalist sound existing somewhere between
experimental
black metal and ambience. "All of our maps are lost
in the
wind, luxurious wordplay back in hand, laced to the nines
in immaculate
decadence, the late Oregon fold, life on a grey seacoast,
snow
sailing into the deep December lavender of a heartbeat's
cadence,
drinking grenache, over and over, grenache grenache
grenache,
spiced lacquer coating in the fade of dusk, passages from
‘A
Rebours,’ manic laughter at old art and new
vignettes, music
of the sea, stars, drugs, dreams, soft nothingness
treasured,
and after much delay we have finally started recording the
new
album." Packaged with glued-on foil-printed velvet
sleeves.
M. WARD-DUET FOR GUITARS#2-LP - Coming on
the
heels of his six-year stint in indie rock/folk trio
Rodriguez,
M. Ward crafted these tunes on his travels between San
Luis, Chicago,
and Portland. Recorded by longtime friend Adam Selzer at
the then-fledgling
Type Foundry Studio in Portland, this album is about as
intimate
as it gets.
The voices are hushed and whispered. The guitars are
subtle yet
precise, hinting at the virtuosity that would rear its
head on
future releases and collaborations. Taking pages from the
book
of John Fahey, with nods to Leadbelly and Woody Guthrie,
this
album is the perfect starting point for your obsession
with M.
Ward. First time released on vinyl! 180-gram audiophile
virgin
vinyl, direct metal mastering, and full-color inner
sleeve.
YEAH YEAH YEAHS-IS IS-2X7" (import)
- An
EP of brand-new Yeah Yeah Yeahs studio recordings, Is Is
represents
the heart of this riveting band - the interplay between
Karen,
Nick, and Brian - on five lean and urgent tracks that best
capture
the excitement of the band's live shows. Intending to
capture
that energy, the band made a live video, filmed at an
exclusive
performance at Glasslands Gallery in Williamsburg
Brooklyn, for
each of the tracks on this EP, with co-directors KK
Barrett (Sofia
Coppola films) and Lance Bangs (Nirvana, Sonic Youth
videos).
Fans may recognize some of these fantastic tracks from the
band's
live sets, but they have remained live faves only as they
never
thematically fit the band's full length albums - until
now.
