ORDER SOME STUFF

Hey - maybe you noticed but maybe you didn't. Anyway, I changed the news page to a blog site because it's easier for me to update and gives you all more info on one page. So if you don't want to click on the show list you can just glance at it, but there are links on the show page so you should go there anyhow. This way is easier to search and keep up to date with too, and if you want you can even use that fancy RSS feed stuff. This has been set up for a while but I don't think anyone knew about it and I've finally decided to give it a full-on try. So let me know what you think. I've added all of the updates from the old pages and from before we even had a real website from the Myspace page because no one seems to check Myspace anymore. So all the way from the beginning in 2005.

Notice that new button up there that says "ORDER"? Well, we have unleashed the small yet nimble Lunchbox webstore. This has been in the works for some time as well, but it kept getting put on the back burner for various reasons. It's mostly local releases for now along with Lunchbox releases and a few other things. Hopefully this will help spread the word on some local stuff and make them easier to find. It is by no means anywhere near what we have in the store for sale, so if you are looking to order something else just email or call. I'll try to add new stuff when I can, but it's never going to be our entire stock - you have to come in to browse that.

So go order some stuff!

P.S. - If you are reading this on the old lunchboxrecords.com/news.html page because you have it bookmarked or followed some link, you should go here for the newer, prettier version.

SEPTEMBER 2009 PT. 2 PLUS 33 1/3 SALE RETURNS!

Holy crap, 2 stock updates in one month. It's a miracle, but we're trying to keep up with stuff and there are a ton of new releases coming out. If you don't see something on these list just ask, and if there is something coming out in the future just ask and we'll get it for you. Wouldn't you rather order from us than some crappy website that sends your records in giant boxes or charges more than we do anyway? We can ship it to you as well if you don't want to drive here. We'll ship pretty much anything to you for a $3.00 flat rate.

New stuff in stock for the last few weeks here. If you want to mailorder something, just send us an email with what you want!

We also now have a Facebook page and a Twitter page.

Anyway, now to the more important stuff...the return of the 33 1/3 sale!

We had this last fall although it was the week Wachovia crumbled so not the best timing (oops!), but it was still really successful and no one really understood that I was celebrating my 33.3rd birthday anyway, so we're doing it again. We need to clear things out and you need cheap records, what a great trade! Tell all of your friends because this is short notice and if you snooze that's too bad. We don't do many sales anyway, but we appreciate your business and want to show you with this awesome sale.

EVERYTHING IN THE STORE IS 15% OFF!
- LPs, CDs, DVDs, 7"s, 10"s, books, stickers, patches, everything! Saturday 9-26-09 ONLY!

IN ADDITION ALL USED LPs, CDs, & DVDs ARE BUY 2 GET 1 FREE! - This is combined with the 15% off, which basically amounts to buy one get one free (or a combined 44% off of all used cds & dvds if you want to get exact). Hopefully that makes sense. It's a lot easier for us to ring it up that way.

Thanks again - lots more great stuff coming next week too like the new Avett Brothers on CD (LP is already out and waiting for you).

LOCAL MUSIC RELEASE UPDATE

We now have the new Bo White Duo Select CD in stock now.

-new 9 song cd by Yardwork/Calabi Yau/Kinnikinnik dude Bo plus vibraphone and drums. It's also REALLY cheap and probably won't stick around long.

Some reviews of local stuf from the new issue of Maximum Rock'N'Roll:

GRIDS - "Suits" EP
Three songs from this newer North Carolina band of dirgey-punk that brings to mind SWANS, JESUS LIZARD, and contemporaries PISSED JEANS and WALLS. The singer sounds more like a HC guy singing for a band of weirdos than a weirdo singing for a band of weirdos, and he does it well, which keeps this more punk than say, weird. cool stuff. (VL)
($5.00 ppd from Lunchbox)

LOWBROW - "Broken Speeach" EP
Wow, here's a surprise - modern mid-tempo hardcore that's actually good. Catchy, too. This might be a shitty comparison, but a couple of the songs here sound to me like a slower LEFT FOR DEAD, or maybe LEWD ACTS or if TRASH TALK was as good as everyone thinks. Lyrics are in the more personal vein, but strongly written, and deal with child abuse, the crushing weight of existence, and the plague of human civilization. Definitely worth your money. (XV)
(Self Aware)

from George Tabb's column:
ROGUE NATIONS
Also out is "Be Your Own Rogue Nation" from the Rogue Nations! This is a cool young band and they know their punk rock. Very much in the style of the Dead Kennedys, the songs here are political, personal, and funny and shit! Tunes like "Paris Hilton Generation" and "Pat Robertson Death Clock" are right on! You go, guys! Oh, the tune "Planned Community" is my favorite song this month.
-----------------------------------------

All of these wonderful items are available at Lunchbox Records.

Bo White CD - $2.99
Grids 7" - $3.99
Lowbrow 7" - $3.99
Rogue Nations LP - $7.99, CD - $4.99

We will more than sell them through mail order as well, and if you are interested in wholesale, we can help you contact the right folks or do it ourselves.

still available hot local stuff:

Grids - "Riot Girls" cassette - 2 BIkini Kill covers $1.99
2013 Wolves - "Sinners Get Ready" CD - 13 songs of guitar/drums duo, mostly instrumental, like Dick Dale meets Hella $4.99
Yardwok - s/t CD - super catchy as hell anthemic songs. 7 piece band, like PG. 99 meets Akron Family $4.99
Young & In The Way - "Newborn" CD - 6 song CD, members of Lowbrow too, but with more metal/Converge/etc influence. $4.99
Meth Mountain - "Gentrificat" CD - members of Grids and Obstruction. Catchy heavy hardcore with a strong SST and Hot Snakes influence $3.99
Andy the Doorbum - "Art is Shit" CD - new 25 song cd of Andy's many personalities. From folk to punk , but definitely NOT folk-punk. $9.99
25 Minutes to Go - "It's Go Time" CD - new 9 song cd of Social Distortion style punk. Includes their crowd favorite cover of "Friends In Low Places". $9.99
Great Architect - S/T - LP - new 11 song LP of free jazz goodness. Like Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic ensemble if they grew up on punk. Members of Black Congo, Hombrinus Dudes, Bob Fields, etc. Limited to 200 copies, super nice screen printed covers $9.99

Please super Charlotte local music. There's a lot of cool shit going on here so don't sleep on it.

Thanks,
Scott

SEPTEMBER 2009

Well it has been quite a while but somehow we managed a new stock update for you. I don't mean to let these things slide, but typing all of this stinks and there's always a pile of used records calling my name asking to be priced. This is most of what's come in the last couple weeks from mid-August up until the first week of September.

We recently were picked as the BEST PLACE TO BUY CDS by Creative Loafing's critics. It should also be noted that we were mentioned as also the BEST PLACE TO BUY VINYL since for some reason they don't have a separate category for that one. Thanks to everyone who voted.

We received the test presses for our next release a week or so ago and it sounds great. It will be our first LP in a long time, this one by Columbia, SC band SLED. SLED is a hardcore band with ex-members of Assfactor 4, Unherd, and Tonka. If you know any of those bands, you should be stoked. If not, just trust us and check out their myspace page.

Be sure to check out our show list too. We don't have a ton coming up, but some really good ones including the LP release show by Great Architect, a Charlotte jazz/noise rock band.

New stuff in stock for the last few weeks here. If you want to mailorder something, just send us an email with what you want!

We also now have a Facebook page and a Twitter page.

and of course we have this show coming up at The Milestone:

GRIDS 7"S ARE FINALLY HERE

Long time no update. Busy trying to actually have a life outside of working 7 days a week I guess. Anyhow of course the big news is that the new Grids 7" is finally out. We are having a record release show on June 12th at the Milestone with Yardwork and Tenspeed Trio. We are pleased to be putting out another record by another great local band. The records will be $4.00 at the show or in the store, but at the show you can get a special limited release cover. More info here.

Also a few other local bands are planning some vinyl release, so be on the lookout for stuff from Lowbrow, Great Architect, and I think a Black Congo LP in the next few months.

We have an in-store performance Saturday, June 13 with Richard Swift who is playing with the Fray at the Charlotte Boutique Amphitheater that night. Here is what Creative Loafing has to say about him:

The Fray blah-blah-blah, hit song on Lost blah-blah-blah, blah-blah-the American Coldplay-blah, etc. The only possible reasons for attending this show if you're not a weepy 16-year-old are to hear what the acoustics sound like at the new Uptown venue, or opener Richard Swift, who's been described as "Prince sitting in on the Plastic Ono Band sessions."

We are still trudging on here at the store. Tons of new release and great used stuff, but with me trying to keep up with everything I haven't typed up a new release list in quite a while. If you are ever wondering if we have something or will be getting it, just call or email us and will be glad to tell you if we have it or order it for you if we don't. We get lots of stuff each week and our prices are usually cheaper than other stores in town. And before you order stuff online check with us because we'll be more than glad to ship to you as well. And we'll ship your records in boxes meant for records, not some giant box like those idiots at Amazon. We actually care about vinyl here, which is also why we put sleeves on our used records and don't stick annoying price tags directly on the cover like other stores.

Anyway, stop by and say hi and buy some stuff or don't. - Scott

ALSO, we will be having a drawing for a $50 gift certificate to be drawn on Saturday night.

AND IN ADDITION TO ALL OF THIS...we're going to bring out as many posters (and trust us, we have billions of them) & whatever else we can find to give to ya. It helps us, it helps you, it helps the world. Ok, maybe not the whole world. But we hope you'll enjoy what you can have.

The only requirement to get all this stuff is to stop by and buy something -- or, at the very least, look around and see if there's anything you want. I'm sure other stores will have more strings attached to get some of these free items, but we'd rather you have them then not, you know? We appreciate the year-round business that everyone in this community (and beyond) has brought us, year after year. Stop by on this new holiday and get a little somethin' back.

AND most importantly, we are having a Record Store Day Sale. Or you can call it our 3.5 year anniversary sale since we just had our 3rd Anniversary in January (we were a little late). Anyhow, here's the deal:

EVERYTHING IN THE STORE IS 15% OFF!
- LPs, CDs, DVDs, 7"s, 10"s, books, stickers, patches, everything! Saturday only!

IN ADDITION ALL USED CDS & DVDS ARE BUY 2 GET 1 FREE! - This is combined with the 15% off, which basically amounts to buy one get one free (or a combined 44% off of all used cds & dvds if you want to get exact). Hopefully that makes sense. It's a lot easier for us to ring it up that way.

FREE LUNCHBOX RECORDS SLIPMAT WITH $50 PURCHASE - we had these made just for this and figured people might use this more than a shirt.

We just got these in and they look like this:

We don't have any bands playing during the day because if you've been in here during one of our shows you know we have to move a lot of stuff around which kind of messes up the sale aspect of the day. We've managed to have about 300 bands play here in 3 years though, so we're definitely trying to do our part. Anyway, we are having a DJ that day to spin cool records of his collection, some of mine, some of Rob's and if you want to bring some of yours let us know and maybe we can do that too. Later that night MOENDA will be playing. This is the new band with 2/3 of Calabi Yau, whom we obviously loved enough to put out a 7" by. Rogue Nations was supposed to play their LP/CD release too, but some last minute events have made them have to postpone that. The Have & The Have Nots will be playing also.

See you Saturday!!

Now for my rant...(reprinted from last year for your convenience)

You're probably wondering what RECORD STORE DAY is anyway? I was at first too. But it's basically a revamped customer appreciation day where hopefully you the customer appreciates us as well and the fact that you live in or near a town that still has independent record stores. I personally don't like buy things online, but lots of people do. But it's great to know that you can go to a store and browse and stumble on things you never would have thought of or heard of otherwise. You don't get too much of that online. We also do everything in our capabilities to sell you records as cheap as we can. This means buying direct whenever possible and searching for deals and unfortunately not bringing some stuff in because big labels like to give chain stores better deals than the little guy. Our prices for most things we stock are typically $2-$5 cheaper than the big store across town. We don't do sales often because we prefer to make it cheap all of the time. We stock tons of LPs and 7"s because we love the format and when I opened this store the other stores we're still busy trying to kill the format. I believe in independent music and labels and try to stock as much as I can which means a lot of lesser known indie, punk and metal titles. I'm not against major labels, but 99% of what they release is manufactured garbage, although they were all once viable indie labels.

I've been going to record stores since as long as I can remember, buying my first 7" in 1984 and getting into punk a couple years later. It wasn't until I moved to Atlanta that I had good stores that stocked underground releases and I've been addicted ever since. If I didn't love record stores I wouldn't own one. I'd go get a job that made a lot more money. People come in here a lot and tell me they love the store and it's great, and lots of out of town folks and bands do too. I really have no reference point on that anymore since I'm here seven days a week. There's only 2 other stores that sell vinyl in town, one is oldies oriented and the other banned me for life when I stopped working there and opened my own store. So I never get to go to any other stores and just try to make mine the one I would want to go to. I'm nowhere near that point yet and am working to improve it all of the time. I value people's suggestions and take them seriously, probably a little too seriously. But if you don't tell me what you want I can't read minds. The point of this being that I think the store is pretty good, and there are tons of folks that don't have a decent record store anywhere near them. So hopefully you'll support us. I realize the store isn't for everybody though.

We will continue to sell you lots of records we and you think are cool, and we will continue to have shows in the store as long as I can and bring awesome out of town bands to Charlotte. We are very thankful of those of you that have supported us for the last 3.5 years. And if you've never been here before, please come visit us.

-Scott

LABEL NEWS

The GRIDS 7"s are almost here. We have the covers ready to go, and we got our first test press last week which had a little issue that will hopefully get fixed next week. But anyway we are planning an awesome release show at The Milestone on June 12th with Grids, Yardwork, Moenda, and Tenspeed. Oh yeah, the first 30 copies will come with special screened covers, and all copies will come with download coupons.

After that we should have the SLED LPs out pretty soon as well. Everything has been mastered and is ready. I just have to recoup all the money I spent on RSD first. If you don't know, SLED is from Columbia, SC and is 2 of the folks from Assfactor 4 and rocks accordingly.

One more special surprise after that - another LP! This will prove to be our busiest year as a label since 1995. Ha ha.

ALL USED DVDs ARE BUY 2 GET 1 FREE

From now until 4/17/09 all used dvds are on sale - buy 2 get 1 free. A lot of people have been selling their collections and it's starting to pile up. So now we need to make room. We just marked down a bunch more in our budget section as well. Most of our used dvds are $6 or less too.

RECORD STORE DAY - APRIL 18, 2009

I realize I haven't updated this in a while, mostly just from being busy doing a million things. We are still getting tons of new releases in all of the time which I can hopefully have some typed up next week. In fact we have remodeled (sort of), changing our cd racks to ones that are easier to browse which also gave us room to add a few more LP bins. So now you can flip through the records easier and we have more room to add even more vinyl! Thanks to Steven and Rob for helping out.

Record Store Day is coming up soon and there are way more things this year. Last year was awesome and I guess people felt left out because there are tons of releases coming out that day that are limited. As soon as I have some kind of grasp on them all I will post them, but with so many we're probably going to miss something and piss someone off, but we're trying our best. We'll be having some bands play this year too, although at night so as not to get in the way of your record buying.

Among the releases that day are a ton of 7"s. There were a few last year, but way more this year. However, we would just to point out that unlike a lot of other stores we stock hundreds of new 7" singles every day. Why? Because we love vinyl and 7"s.

January 27, 2009

Thanks to everyone for a really great weekend. It was tons of fun. The sale went really well and lots of records were sold to many smiling people. The Graf Orlock/Lewd Acts show was awesome with an amazing turnout. The Fucked Up in-store went amazingly well too considering it was in the middle of the day. The band was super friendly and we talked about records, Antiseen, and Cheerwine (the best soft-drink ever). They even played a Pennywise cover and some KBD song. I think it was by the Child Molesters but I'm not positive on that. The show at the Milestone sold out which is as much as we could ask for too.

Anyway, you can read some more about things on Rob's blog. You can also view pictures of the Graf Orlock and Lewd Acts show here, the F.U. show and in-store here, some photos Neal Mims took of the Saturday shows here, some that Steven Pilker took here, and finally some more of the F.U. in-store that Bryan Reed took here. Thanks to everyone for all of the support.

January 2009

LUNCHBOX RECORDS 3RD ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND!

It's been a while since an update on here, but we have lots of news. This coming weekend we are having our 3rd Anniversary Show and Sale.

Friday we have Graf Orlock, Lewd Acts, and Lowbrow. It should be fun.

Saturday we have the double whammy. First we have Fucked Up playing an early all-ages in-store show. Free and just them.

Then Saturday night we continue the celebration with a show at the Milestone with Fucked Up, Double Negative, Grids, and Planet Piss. Unfortunately this show is 18+ though. We are selling tickets fro $10 at the store. Buy them now as they are going quick and it's $12 if you wait until the day of. You can also buy them on Etix.com if you want.

There will also be silk screened poster for the show lovingly designed by Ben Gelnett on sale that night like this:

Then we have our big 3rd Anniversary Sale all weekend long. Everything is 20% off. Simple enough. Thanks for the support!!!

We are going to be closing a little early on Saturday the 24th so that we can make it over to the Milestone to watch/play the show.

We also now have tickets to some more awesome upcoming Milestone shows including MDC, The Meatmen, A.C., and Goblin Cock (guitarist/singer of Pinback's metal band). Go here for a complete list of tickets we are selling for them and the Neighborhood Theatre.

Lastly, our friend Sergey has started a little mix-tape exchange here for folks. He made some actual tapes to start it off, but I assume cd-rs are OK as long as they are mixes that you put actual love into and make them look nice I guess. Anyway, if you want to participate it's simple: you bring in a mix you made, you take one from the box other people made. You and they find new music they love. Everyone wins.

November 25, 2008

Not much news right now. We have a bunch of shows coming up in December that you should check out, and tons of great used stuff coming up. And being that there are less new releases this time of year, we are finally catching up on pricing the backlog of piles of records we have. Too many records and not enough space. Lots of good used CDs too. We should have a big book order in next week to give you an early start on Christmas shopping.

And of course we have a new stock update. Lots of good stuff. Check it out and if you want to order something just send us an email.

Lastly, the deadline for the Pavement pre-order is December 1st, so this is the last weekend to do it. If you don't pre-order you don't get the bonus LP!!!

November 7, 2008

Of course once again it's been a while since the last update. Things have been hectic here. Rob has been out for a few weeks since he had surgery in October so that means more work for me and less time to do it. In other bad news, I just found out the other day that Central Records has closed up shop. We didn't compete at all really and it was nice to have another record shop in the neighborhood. So now we can unfortunately say we are the only independent record store left in town. Yikes!

In the good news department, there is an article about us and the resurgence of vinyl in the November issue of Uptown Magazine. You can read it here - (article starts on page 36) or here. I tried to point out some stupid things that are in every "vinyl making a comeback" article this time.

There is also an interview with Bo of Calabi Yau in the new issue of Blü Magazine.

And of course we have a new stock update. Lots of good stuff including the Slingshot 2009 organizers which a lot of people have been waiting on, the Melvins 4xLP, Earth LP, Gore reissues, and a ton more stuff. Check it out and if you want to order something just send us an email.

Some current promotions we have going:
  • MGMT - Oracular Spectacular - CD on sale for $9.99
  • MGMT - Oracular Spectacular - LP on sale for $11.99
  • Mates of State - Re-arrange Us - CD on sale for $9.99 - playing at the Neighborhood Theatre on Nov. 13

Welcome to the new Lunchbox Records website!

After what seems like an eternity we finally have a real website. It took a lot of me learning how to do a ton of stuff myself, but I guesss I'm better off for it in the long run. Anyway, it is now here and the way I want it until I change my mind again. Hopefully that won't be soon. There is a lot of stuff on here. The "About" section has all of our handy FAQ's, plus links to tons of photos, a history of Lunchbox that still needs to be written by my brother & I, directions, and more. There is a list of the shows we have in the store and/or help promote under the "Shows" link. And down at the bottom of that page is a link to a list of old shows we've done here. 2006-2007 is a little fuzzy though. Under the "Label" link you can find info on all of our releases that we've done. Some people only know us as a record label and some only know the store. Now everyone can share. We released 2 records in the last year and are working on a couple more now.

Hopefully now that I'm done with this I can get back to the semi-regular stock updates. A friend even wrote a program for me to make it easier to send those out and post them on the "New Releases" page. That page will get updated as new stuff comes out, but we'll still send out the emails.

After taking a little break from all of this html, css, and xml garbage I will start working on phase two which is our online store. I just have to make it look pretty and add stock to it, so it shouldn't take that long I hope.

As you can see above, we just won "Best Place To Buy CDs" by Charlotte Creative Loafing again, so thanks again for everyone's support. I still wish they had a "best place to buy vinyl" category too...

Thanks,
Scott
